John Koster, a Republican congressional candidate in Washington state, said Sunday that "the rape thing" is not a good enough reason for a woman to have an abortion, The Huffington Post reported Oct. 31. "Dismissing it as a 'thing' is an awfully casual way for him to talk about it, and I think it highlights how little he understands the ramifications and the seriousness of the issue. So that's very problematic," Democratic opponent, Suzan DelBene spokesperson said.

There is only one female Communist provincial chief, Sun Chunlan, the party secretary in Fujian province, on the east coast. In the past 30 years, China’s Communists have appointed only four women as provincial governors -- Sun is only the second woman Party provincial chief in the 63-year history of Chinese Communist rule. “If we talk about power-sharing, they don’t want women holding up half the sky — or even one-third of the sky,” said Feng Yuan, a women’s rights activist.

Indiana's first female Supreme Court justice since 1999 will be sworn into office next week, reported The Daily Reporter Nov. 2.  Tippecanoe County Judge Loretta Rush will take the oath of office during a private ceremony on Wednesday. Rush has been a juvenile court judge for 14 years.

U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland ruled Wed. Oct. 31 that a Catholic-owned family business in Michigan does not need to comply with the Affordable Care Act's birth control benefit, RH Reality Check reported Nov. 2. The temporary injunction affects the owner of Weingartz Supply Company and his approximately 170 employees, and like a similar ruling from a federal court in Colorado, is limited only to that challenger. In July, U.S. District Judge John Kane temporarily prevented the government from requiring the Catholic owners of Hercules Industries Inc, a private manufacturer of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, from complying with the birth control benefit as well.
